The PSD National Permanent Bureau convenes today at 11:00 AM to determine if the Social Democrats will exit the governing coalition or persist. Tensions have escalated significantly due to PSD’s discontent with USR’s position regarding Ion Iliescu’s state funeral.
Shortly before the meeting commenced, some PSD leaders addressed journalists at the party’s headquarters.
**PSD Parliamentarian on USR Members: „Individuals Twisted by Animus”**
Daniel Zamfir, a PSD parliamentarian, remarked that „PSD did not enter the government simply to remain for two months,” but the behavior of USR colleagues requires reassessment. He labeled his coalition partners as „individuals twisted by animus.”
„We are examining today whether we should remain in government or not. There have been issues concerning the demeanor of certain governing partners. PSD did not join the government for a brief period, especially considering we have more parliamentarians than PNL and USR combined. Clearly, our USR colleagues’ demeanor needs to change. Their behavior has been disrespectful from the outset.
I observe attitudes and remarks from USR… Responses from individuals twisted by animus. With animus, you cannot construct, only divide,” Zamfir conveyed to journalists.
**Grindeanu’s Justifications for the PSD Meeting**
Interim PSD President Sorin Grindeanu announced last Friday, August 8, the assembly of the National Permanent Bureau.
„I made the decision to assemble the National Permanent Bureau meeting on Monday to evaluate the circumstances within the governing coalition following some partners’ stances regarding the official ceremonies for former Romanian President Ion Iliescu. PSD believes that, irrespective of ideological disparities or historical interpretations, respect for state institutions, constitutional norms, and historical memory must prevail in political affairs.
Conducting official ceremonies mandated by law upon the passing of a former head of state is not a choice but an institutional obligation,” Grindeanu stated, refraining from naming Dominic Fritz’s party.
The National Permanent Bureau meeting is intended to assess the repercussions of these occurrences on the functionality of the governing coalition and to establish a clear party stance concerning the continuation of governmental collaboration, rooted in mutual respect and political integrity. PSD remains dedicated to sustaining a stable government in the interest of citizens but stresses that political loyalty, good faith, and dialogue among partners are vital foundations for any enduring political framework,” Grindeanu remarked.
**National Mourning, Strife Between PSD and USR**
The passing of Ion Iliescu has caused friction within the governing coalition. PSD and USR are at odds after Dominic Fritz’s party requested during the August 5 government meeting that a national day of mourning not be declared and declared its members would not participate in official ceremonies.
Subsequently, PSD announced that party leaders opted not to attend coalition meetings until USR „exhibits political maturity and adjusts its demeanor.”
According to Digi24, another frustration for the social democrats is yielding more prefect and subprefect positions and other central and local roles to Dominic Fritz’s party.
**What Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan States**
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan expressed on Sunday at Antena 3 that „it is challenging to align things” in a coalition consisting of four parties plus the national minorities group but cautioned that „political stability” is „a crucial indicator by which a country is assessed.”
When queried about his response if social democrats decide to exit the government, the liberal prime minister stated: „I hope we do not encounter such a scenario, and I believe that all of us in government are cognizant of the nation’s situation, and a significant indicator by which a country is judged is also tied to political stability.”
„Political stability encompasses predictability when implementing measures, the capability to execute them effectively, long-term policies, normality, and potential for development,” Ilie Bolojan continued.
