The European Union has disbursed an additional 4.05 billion euros in financial assistance to Ukraine just before the nation’s Independence Day on August 24, as reported by dpa and according to Agerpres.
„The EU’s solidarity with Ukraine remains steadfast. We are committed not only to Ukraine’s recovery but also to its future as a sovereign and democratic nation,” stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the social media platform X.
As per the Commission, 3.05 billion euros are derived from the Ukraine Facility, which is an aid initiative amounting to 50 billion euros for the period of 2024-2027. The leftover 1 billion euros is a result of a macro-financial assistance loan, part of a G7 initiative that totals about 45 billion euros.
The Commission also pointed out that the release of funds was facilitated by the retraction of a law that would have limited the independence of Ukraine’s central anti-corruption bodies. It welcomed this development and stressed that reforms in the rule of law and anti-corruption are essential for Ukraine’s journey towards European Union membership.
Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, the EU and its member states have committed nearly 169 billion euros in aid to Ukraine, which encompasses military and financial support as well as assistance for refugees.
