Multiple individuals lost their lives and others sustained injuries on Friday when a bus carrying around 50 passengers, en route to New York City from Niagara Falls, strayed off the roadway and toppled into a ditch, as indicated by American state police and reported by CNN.
The driver lost control for „unidentified reasons,” leading to the bus overturning and causing several injuries, stated New York State Police spokesperson, James O’Callaghan, during a press briefing.
Authorities suspect that among the victims is a minor, according to the police representative.
Translators were summoned to the incident site since a majority of the bus passengers hail from Indian, Chinese, and Filipino backgrounds, O’Callaghan noted.
In the aftermath of the accident, multiple individuals found themselves trapped inside, the police representative further remarked.
Authorities are addressing the situation at the location, with „numerous” ongoing rescue efforts, he added.
The incident took place on Interstate 90, close to the town of Pembroke, to the east of Buffalo, as reported by the state police in a statement.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul labeled the crash as „tragic” in a message on platform X, stating that rescue teams „are striving to save and assist everyone involved.”
